Sunglasses FAQ's

As eye care professionals we are often asked "What are the best sunglasses to buy?”

If you wear prescription clear lenses regularly for distance vision, you should also have your sunglasses in prescription. While everyone’s preferences vary, at Eyecatchers Optometrists we recommend Nupolar polarised lenses. You can be assured that all Nupolar lenses block 100% of UVA and UVB harmful rays.

Nupolar polarised lenses are the ideal choice for single vision, bifocal and progressive addition lens wearers who want the best prescription sunglasses possible. They have a polarising efficiency of up to 99% and not only eliminate annoying glare, but enhance contrast for maximum visual clarity.

The lenses are created with a polarised film which is made from iodine crystals randomly imbedded into a translucent film base. The imbedded film is stretched in one direction which causes the crystals to become aligned in parallel rows. It is these "rows" which become like venetian blinds, to block light in certain directions.

Because the crystals need to be aligned in rows to be effective it is not possible for them to be clear as they could not do their job of effectively  blocking light in a specific direction.

Nupolar lenses come in three different tints:

What is Glare?

Light hits a surface such as a car bonnet, the surface of a lake, or countless other objects at an angle called "Brewster's angle". The bright reflected light results in Glare.

How do polarised lenses work?

Polarised film is created by having Iodine crystals randomly imbedded into a translucent film base. The imbedded film is stretched in one direction which causes the crystals to become aligned in parallel rows. It is these "rows" which become like venetian blinds, to block light in certain directions.

Why can't I have a clear polarised lens?

The Iodine crystals in the polarized film are aligned in parallel rows like a venetian blind to block light in one direction. This is why you cannot have a clear polarizer. If the crystals were clear, they could not do their job of blocking light in a specific direction.

How efficient are Nupolar Polarised Lenses?

NuPolar Lenses have a polarizing efficiency up to 99%, this is due to their state of the art polarizing filter.

Nupolar lenses come in three different tints.
Is glare really that dangerous?

Glare is a major contributor to traffic accidents, and traffic deaths.
NuPolar lenses not only eliminate annoying glare, but enhance contrast for maximum visual clarity.

Can I tint a Nupolar lens?

Yes, because the film is cast inside the lens, you can tint a NuPolar lens just as you would any other ophthalmic lens.
Because the "natural" colour of the lens is a Gray1, you can tint to a 2 or 3 or a gradient, and still maintain all the benefits of polarization.

Fly fishermen!

We often tint the Gray1 lens the popular yellow fly fishing colour for the enthusiast trout fisherman.
